90210 vs. Beverly Hills, 90210: Spreading rumors and getting a bad reputation
In this week’s episode of “90210” (To Sext or Not to Sext), the main storyline focused on a “sexting” scandal, which back in the days of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” they had to rely on good-old word of mouth to spread rumors and give their friends a bad reputation.
“Beverly Hills, 90210“/Then: In the early 1990s, West Beverly Hills High School student Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth, who has reprised her role on “90210″) had a bad reputation for sleeping around with guys, in which she was dubbed a school slut. We found out a few years later that the rumor mill was started by her friend, Steve Sanders (Ian Ziering), who was mad at her for their break-up. Kelly spent many years trying to overcome this bad reputation.

“90210″/Now: In 2009, Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes) was dubbed a skank by her frenemy (ah, how the vocabulary has changed), Naomi Clark (AnnaLynne McCord). Naomi believes that Annie slept with Liam Court (Matt Lanter), who was Naomi’s prom date, at their after-prom party in the season finale. Even though Annie didn’t sleep with Liam, Naomi maintains she did and vows to get revenge. And in 2009, technology makes it much easier to make your friend’s life miserable.
A photo of Annie having sex with a senior, which was taken on his cell phone, gets into Naomi’s hands. She ends up anonymously spreading the “sext” all over school (although Annie knows she did it), instantly ruining Annie’s reputation even further. Annie was already hated by classmates for calling the police on Naomi’s after-prom party last year and has been called a skank by Naomi publicly, so now with nude photos of her circulating the school, she is really going to have a hard time overcoming her bad reputation.
But it seems there is one person who can help Annie: Kelly Taylor. Kelly is now the guidance counselor at West Beverly Hills High School, and she should know more than anyone what Annie has been through. Granted, it took Kelly a few years to overcome her bad reputation, but it did happen. Annie’s circumstance is a little different because aside from the whole bad reputation thing, she is battling with bigger demons stemming from her hit-and-run crash after prom, in which a man was killed.
So, if Kelly does take on Annie’s problems, she certainly will have her work cut out for her. Kelly is expected to return in episode three of the season, which airs next week.
